Spend the first day of your epic adventure exploring the historic town of Cossack and the seaside village of Point Samson. For lunch, enjoy one of life’s simple pleasures, fish and chips at The Samson Beach Tavern before you head home and stop off in Roebourne. Visit the local Aboriginal art workshops and galleries and take a look at the new Ganalili Aboriginal Cultural Centre for the afternoon. Be sure not to get too lost in the arts and leave some time to set up camp overnight in Karratha at one of the local Caravan Parks.

After a hearty breakfast from one of Karratha’s cafes, hop in your 4WD and travel via Nanutarra Roadhouse on the NW Coastal Highway as you head towards Paraburdoo & Tom Price along the Nanutarra Munjina Road. Take in the roadside red dirt and spinifex as you make your way to Cheela Plains Station to settle in at your outback campsite at Cheela Plains Station. If you get your timing right, join fellow travellers on an astronomy experience to explore the night sky wilderness. Whether you are a beginner or expert level photographer, you’ll be sure to capture some magic on your camera, or take advantage of a range of equipment on offer.

After breakfast join a tag-along-tour in your 4WD for the day. Get your car dirty while you explore and discover the magnificent South Vivash & Beasley Gorges with a local knowledgeable guide. Explore rock pools, take a break from the Pilbara heat with a swim and discover fresh water mussels at the refreshing Mussel Pool. Experience an inland working cattle station in action and feel the passion for preserving the Aussie outback before returning to your peaceful and scenic camp set up.

Wake up refreshed and continue your journey north via Paraburdoo to the mining town of Tom Price, nestled deep in the Hamersley Ranges. Take a selfie with a haul truck wearing your hard hat and safety glasses on the Lestock Coach Tour of the Rio Tinto Mine. You’ll learn all things Iron Ore in air conditioned comfort. After a lunch break and a look around picturesque Tom Price, stock up on camp food supplies and continue your drive on to Karijini National Park. Once you arrive head to Joffree Gorge lookout to give you a taste of the stunning natural landscape and what’s in store for the following days before setting up camp at the environmentally friendly Karijini Eco Retreat.

Before your commence your day of outdoor adventures, stop in at the impressive and symbolic goanna shaped Karijini Visitor Centre to learn more about the Aboriginal significance of this unique country. Browse through a range of static and interactive displays and information before you head out to take in the tropical oasis, Fortescue Falls and Fern Pool. You’ll need to hike down a steep trail, don’t forget your swimmers to enjoy the park’s permanent waterfall. You’ll sleep well after a day of exploring and be eager to see more of this epic part of the country tomorrow.

For the more adventurous who want a full fitness experience, join in on the day tours offered by West Oz Active. If not, take yourself on a journey to the ‘Centre of the Earth’ by visiting Hancock George where you’ll hike down a steep and narrow gorge through polished rock and be rewarded finding Kermit’s Pool. If easy access is your thing, head to Kalamina George and take in the 30 minute return walk to the natural pool discovering streams and out of this world natural rock structures. This will be your last night camping at the Karijini Eco Retreat.

Time to jump in your trusty 4WD as you share the journey with massive road trains to travel via the remote Auski Roadhouse and arrive in Port Hedland by lunchtime. Explore the town known for its resource industry, long trains, big ships and salt piles as you settle into your campsite at the Discovery Park. Hand over the steering wheel while you take in the Twilight Industry tour departing at 4.45pm. Your evening will include watching the sun set over the port, ships coming and going as workers light up their huge workplace for night shift.

Start your day by joining the popular morning Seafarers Port Hedland harbour tour at 9am, then take a unique up close look at the Fortescue Metals Group’s port facility tour. You may find yourself considering a career change into resources while you enjoy lunch at one of the many cafes in Port Hedland before travelling onto Karratha, a 2-3 hour drive, best enjoyed while playing your favourite outback Aussie playlist. You should arrive in time to set up camp for the next 3 nights at one of Karratha’s Caravan Parks.

This morning travel via Roebourne to Python Pool in the Millstream Chichester National Park. Continue onto Deep Reach for a refreshing dip (swim with the local catfish!) Enjoy a picnic lunch or make use of the BBQs provided. You might be lucky enough to be joined by one of the friendly local kangaroos. Take in the scenic cliff lookout (easily accessed by car), the historic homestead or stretch your legs on the wetlands walking trail before making your way back to Karratha. In the evening, enjoy a drink and dinner at one of our modern bars or restaurants.

Head out for the morning and join the Murujuga Rock Art and Cultural Experience Tour guided by indigenous custodians who will share their culture and stories with you at the Murujuga National Park. Continue down the Burrup Peninsula to the North West Shelf Visitors Centre which overlooks a gas plant and gives insight to the processes used. You’ll be ready to take a swim at Hearsons Cove where you can enjoy the shelly beach or explore the flats at low tide. Then head to the charming seaside town of Dampier and don’t forget to take a pic with the Red Dog commemorative statue. Return to Karratha for the last night of your epic DIY camping adventure.
